MASTERTON MURDER CASE.
The verdict in the Mastertou murder case is an outrage on justice. That a man should be murdered in the public streets, the murder cooly premeditated, and the murderer acquitted on the ground of insanity, is one of the most monstrous things wc have ever heard of. After such an exhibition the life of no man or women is safe from the murderous propensity of any fiend who can get a lawyer to plead, and a jury to believe, that the villainous deed was the result of insanity ; and then be found “ not guilty ” of a deed witnessed by dozens of people in the open day. Whatever insanity there was about Somerville was tho result of his own deliberate arc m taking drink. If drinking is to be a legitimate excuse for crime, then the sooner drink is absolutely abolished the better so that a man who again wants to commit a diabolical crime and get off ..scot-free, shall not again have the excuse of lunacy through drink to stuff down the throats of the Wellington people.
