Pongaroa.
(From our own Correspondent.)
Owing to the steady increase of population here, the want of a school for the rising generation is the cry, and a meeting for that purpose is to be convened shortly by some pf the settlers. No doubt good will result, The bullock dray ?oad between here and Aohanga is in a very bad state. On my way through last ■week I was pleased to hear that about S miles of formation had just been surveyed, etc., and will bo contracted for almost immediately.
Our Government Engineer has been busy taking levels etc., for our much wanted bridge across the Pongaroa biver, in the vicinity of the township, and we hope steps for its erection will be taken in the near future. The Postal authorities, I was led to believe, were exercising great energy by getting reports and petitions etc., but to date nothing more has been done. Above all a Post office is the most important want in the district, and I think further consideration is necessary. Poison for dogs has been laid in the paddocks surrounding the Township, there being as many as 20 sheep a night worried this past week, it is believed by wild pig-dogs. Mr Berry is having 20 acres of bush felled on his section in the Village Settlement.
