The starting place will be the Gorge bridge and from there competitors will make down stream for the Ashurst Island at the further end of the Gorge, a distance of four miles, more or less. Several enthusiasts have expressed their determination to have a try for the medal. As yet, however, no date has been fixed for the performance. Having definitely decided to relinquish our boot and shoe business, we shall after this date clear the entire stock at greatly reduced prices. In 1/- tins.—Advt. , 450st In regard to the claims ovef tfie Pahiatu Courthouse contract when Laurenson became bankrupt, several notices of liens under the Contractors and Workmen's Lien Act were served on the Minister of Public Works, while some of the wages men obtained orders of attachment under the Workmen's Wages Act upon the moneys owing undor the contract to Laurenson. The Department contends that neither of these Acts ■ apply in the case of contracts with the Crown, and it proposed that all liens and attachment orders should bo withdrawn, and that the moneys owing to Laurenson should be paid to the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy for apportionment among his creditors. This would suit the wages men, for the Bankruptcy Act provides that their wages must be paid in full. The sub-contractors, of course, demurred; hence the actions referred to above. Messrs D. G.
