The sad accident which occurred on Tuesday last, whereby Mr Purmintcr lost his life, again forcibly draws attention to the fact that the roads are too 'narrow. There is now an enormous road traffic in the district, and the highway is so narrow that it is in reality fit to carry only one vehicle at a time. There are few really good crossing places and the wonder is that there are not more accidents. It is useless to blame the local bodies. The fault is not their's. If they have not the means to do the work they cannot do it. The fault lies with the Central Government in not providing the efficient road construction. The Public "Works policy of the colony requires to be reversed in regard to roads as against railways, and one of the most pressing needs of the day is legislation in favor of local bodies, giving them efficient powers to arrange for doing the necessary works in their respective districts.
