THE LATE DISTRICT ENGINEER AND THE RAILWAY FENCE.

! (TO THE KDITOK.) Sir,—ln fair play to the late District Engineer, I would ask you to allow mo to make a few remarks on the subject. 1 was employed in the ].)■ strict Public | Works Office before {the formation even of the portion of the line mentioned was commenced, and for some time after the late District Engineer had left the service. During that time no such authority as you mention was received. A lodger was kept called the Authority Ledger, in which a record of all works authorised from the head office was carefully entered, with amount to be expended on each particular work set down opposite. This ledger\vas my special care and trouble In it no such entry appears neither during my time nor before. I also know that Mr Carr more than once asked the authorities to allow him to fence this section, but without result. From these facts I doubt not you will see how utterly unreliable your information, from whatever source supplied, has been. —I am, &c. M. T. McGeath, Late of Public AVorks Department.
