Sailed — The Jane for Hobartown, the Clematis and Ellen for Newcastle. Arrived — The Esther from Greymouth ; at 3 p.m., the Wellington from Dunedin. She is appointed to sail North at 4 p.m. to-morrow. Wbstport, Wednesday. A Customs collector has visited Ngakawhau to decide the site for the signal station. The bar is good, the channel running straight out, but too narrow for the entrance of any sizeable craft. The Coomerang or similar vessels would stick fast, by their paddle-boxes touching on either side,

Hokitika, Wednesday. The Titan arrived from the Haast River last night ; the Waipara this morning, the latter bringing the Warden. Many of the diggers have returned. News of the rush is unfavorable ; o^nly a few remain on the ground.

Mr Bodell reports : — Sale of store cattle, £5 to £9 ; maize, 4s 4d to 4s 9d ; potatoes, £4 to £5 ; Newcastle coal, £3 10s ; bone dust, £10.

Chbistchxjrch, Wednesday. In the Supreme Court to-day Edwin White, charged with sheep-stealing, defended by Mr W. T. L. Trayers, was sentenced to four years' imprisonment with hard labor ; James Gulliver, charged with three separate cases of embezzlement, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment ; John Price, charged with having made a false declaration under the Marriage Act, defended by Mr Travers, was discharged.

James Wood, a builder, was found dead

in his bed this morning. Cause of death supposed to be heart disease.

The immigrants per Celestial Queen, numbering one hundred and fifty, were all engaged but three families, within three hours after the barracks were thrown open to employers. The following rates of wages were given : — Married couples, £55 to £65 a year and found ; single men, £40 to £50 and found ; -carpenters, 10s per day ; single women £20 to £25 and found.

Port Chalmees, Wednesday.

There was a tremendous landslip at Careup Bay this afternoon, bringing down hundreds of tons of earth. Some people had past just previously.

The Anderson's Bay assault case was tried yesterday. One prisoner, Smith, was found not guilty ; the other three — Jerome, Richens, and Cochrane — were each sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment, with hard labor. This case terminated the session. The Judge, in his address, congratulated the jury on the lightness of the calendar, and compared the smallness of crime in Dunedin with the amount of it in other places.

A new company of bell-ringers have arrived by the Tararua, and will shortly appear

A serious accident occurred this morning. Some bricklayers were finishing the coping to a three -storey building in Princes street, when the coping gave way, and carried the scaffolding with it. All the workmen fell sixty feet to the ground. Smith, a plasterer, was so seriously injured that there are fears that it will be fatal. Other men escaped with cuts and bruises.

The Northern escort brought down 10,573 ounces.

A fire occurred to-day in Stephen's spice factory. Some malt stored in the building ignited by spontaneous combustion. Fortunately the fire was discovered early. The damage is estimated at £200. [Special Telegram to Independent.]

Napier, Wednesday. Bell is here inspecting the Paki Paki to Waipukurau line, with a view of preparing estimates on which Brogden's tender will be based.

The line for the tramway between Waipukurau and the Seventy-Mile Bush is being laid out and prepared for the contract. The work will be pushed on as rapidly as possible, as it is necessary to do so in order that sleepers may bo obtained from the bush for the railway. It will follow the line to be followed by the railway, and will eventually form part of the Napier and Wellington railway. All the immigrants by the ship Douglas for Napier have been engaged.
