MASTERTON.

(FROM OTTR OW2f CORRESPONDENT. ) Mr Mace, of Koao, has set a good example by erecting a finger post on the Kahumangi Road indicating the direction to be taken by journey ors to his homestead, and, at the same time, cautioning them of the treacherous state of the ford. This is a pattern wotthy of imitation, as few of us but are acquainted with the many disasters of which this ford has been the cause. Messrs Fleming and Farmer, of Napier, are just on the point of starting from | here with cattle, having purchased about two hundred head. They also take a few well-bred hacks. The prices paid for both cattle and horses were considered T«ry satisfactory j, in many instances the Owners were paid a figure exceeding their -expectations. Only last Week Mr Bishop, manager for Mr Williams, of Te Aute, Napier, left the Whareama with one hundred head of mixed cattle. The cattle- breeders in this district are now studying the breeding of stock, as they find it beginning to prove very remunerative. The importation of thoroughbred bulls may now be expected. The frame of the Town Hall was raised On Tuesday. Great dissatisfaction is beginning to manifest itself in this quarter, owing to the payments of Provincial Government roadmen and employees being so far in arrears, together with the muddy state of the roads through the township.
