CHORAL SOCIETY'S- CONCERT.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sir — The decided success of the Choral Society's laat season having proved them worthy of somewhat more notice than has yet appeared in your columns, please insert these few remarks. Though soine weeks, I am told, had been lost through non-arrival of copies, the subscribers were well repaid at the concert last Thursday night in. hearing a style of music both, pleasing and new. As with laat season, the present one was opened by a mass for | the first part (by 0. Guonod, whose compositions are becoming very popular). This ought to omen well for a flourishing state of things. I noticed that the pianist's office had changed hands, and although sorry to miss the familiar face of the late pianist after . hia untiring zeal throughout last session, I heartily congratulate the society on being so fortunate as to secure the abilities of the lady who presided the other night ; and her thorough- command of the instrument, together with delicacy of touch, facility of execution, and accurate time formed one of the most pleasing features of the performance. The mass was very well rendered, the devotional feeling being well expressed throughout, both choir and orchestra paying strict attention to their conductor's baton. The second part, from Balfe's-Mazeppa, contained some very pleasing music, although some deem it beneath the society, forsooth ! In this part I had the pleasure of hearing once more the lady whose rich and pleasing voice has always afforded a treat to many in the society's concerts from the first. } The ladies and gentlemen who kindly undertook the solos and duets 'acquitted themselves very -well. The

choir was"- very', effiiis}xtj%juid was supported by the ; all giving proof of great credit* jdujlto their able conductor. : ! £$-'. MM$ .Sloping to "'-shortly^mjmfoch another pleasant evening, — E^fj^fSfcc., . V 5 . Subscriber.
