At a meeting at Port Chalmers last night, the following resolution was carried : — "That in the opinion of this meeting, the Moeraki and Dunedin railway here should be proceeded with immediately, as the Waitaki and Moeraki line is comparatively useless until the Moeraki and Dunedin line has been carried through." The meeting was of opinion that the line ought to go through Port Chalmers, so that the agricultural and other, produce for shipment shall be taken to the shipping port with the least possible cost. A largely-signed requisition was forwarded to the Government yesterday, praying that the duties on sugar and tea might be reduced. The Canary and Poultry Show was a decided success, there being a very large number of entries. 50,000 trout were hatched at Young's Ponds, at Palmerston. Lyttelton, Thursday. Arrived — Yesterday, Velocidade, from Newcastle. The s.s. Wanganui leaves for Wellington at 1.30 p.m., and the s.s. Taranaki at 6.30 p.m.
