Port Chaimebs. — Arrived, 16th — 9 a.m., Ladybird, from Lyttelton. The ship George A. Holt, of Sfc. John's, N. 8., Captain D. H, Norton, arrived in port in tow of the Tmna yesterday afternoon afc 4 o'clock. She is from Sunderland, via Plymouth, having left the latter port on the st,h February ; crossed the equator on March 4tb, . and passed the Cape of Gtood Hope on tbe 18th April. Was off the island of St. Paul's onihe Sth May, and passed Tasmania twenty days later, arriving in harbor as above, after a pasßage of 130 days. The abip ran down her easting between 45' and 46" ; from Tristan d'Achuna fco SeS^Pall's had heavy gales and high seas from^JT.W. to 8.W., and off St. Paul's experienced, a heavy gale from the Bouth-easfc, Which lasted forty-eight hours. Since passing St. Paul's had fine weather and westerly winds. Saw only one vessel since losing tbe south-east trades, and spoke nothing on the passenge. Captain Norton is accompanied by Ms wife and family. Her cargo consistß of railway iron, a portion of which she will take on to Lyttelton after the Wellington lot has been discharged. Owing to the bad state ef the bar afc Sunderland, there were 150 tons of rails short shipped. Messrs Turnbull and Co are agents for the ship. A correspondent of the " Argus," writing from London, thus speaks of losses by underwriters: — "Great excitement prevailed at Lloyd's at the loss of the Atlantic while putting into Halifax. She was splendidly manned, but her length was ten times her width, . an element of danger in case of accident which had always been borne in mind by underwriters, who charged rates for insurance one-JtKlrd mora than for the other firstclass American lines. The worth -^of the Atlantic on tke Ist of June last was £90,000, and it has no doubt increased since. Her cargo would probably be worth about £100,000. The underwriting loss is chiefly in Liverpool and the States. Altogether the losses posted afc Lloyd's on one day were not less than £300,000, and co far this year upwards of 70 ships have been posted at Lloyd's as lost or mißeing, which is half the number of the entire year 1872, which was an excessively unfortunate one. A case of nitric acid which had just been ■hipped on board the steamer Murray, at Hokitika, burst when placed in tho hold, and set fire fco the packing materials around it. The smoke was seen and the case immediately, and fortunately, landed. It is not generally known that a vessel of considerable size is being built afc the junction of the Hospital Creek and the Lagoon, Hokitika. She will, when completed, be fitted with twin screws, driven by a pair of engines 12-borae power (nominal). The following will be the dimensions of the vessel :— Length of keel, 72 feet ; length between perpendiculars, 11 feet j length over all, 76 feet ; extreme breadth, 12 feet 8 inches ; depth of hold, 5 feet 8 inches ; draught of water afc loading line, 4 feet 9 inches; calculated displacement, 81£ tons ; capacity total, 57 tons ; available for cargo, 45 tons. Tho German squadron permanently stationed in the East Indies is to be reinforced by a largo gunboat, and that in the West Indies by two oorvettes and one guiiboat. Ironclads, the "Times" Bays on the best authority, will have to be nothing but iron coffins.
