EDUCATION RATE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT,
Sir, — The test case of the education rate to be tried on Tuesday next seems left to be fought out by Wanganui chiefly. iThis I am inclined to think partakes somewhat of a reflection on this end of the province, which has most loudly complained of the rate, and where numbers have resisted only far enough to be summoned, and then to have paid, together with costs, without trying conclusions. Those of us who believe or hope in the rate being bad will doubtless participate in the result which we expect to follow from a legal investigation of the Act. Our indebtedness in this respect will be all the more marked, as the people of Wanganui seem determined to rely on their own talent in sending counsel, of whom report speaks highly, to contest the rate. One is almost inclined now to be envious in not having been singled out to act the part of Hampdbn. May 31, 1873.
