The vessel which has been lately built by Mr Matheson, near the racecourse, was safely launched into the river yesterday. The heavy fresh gave considerable assistance in the undertaking. The vessel, we believe, was named tho Pioneer, and has been brought down the river, and is at present lying alongside the bank, opposite Kortegast's brewery. Wo believe this is the first boat that has been built and successfully launched in Hokitika, and now that a commencement in ship-building has been begun, we hope to seo many more follow.—" West Coast Times," July 20. The schooner Julia has been wrecked at Takutu Point, Auckland, and John M'Hardy, a seaman, drowned. During her stay at Sydney on her last trip the Nebraska was visited by 25,000 persons The following are the particulars of tho severe weather experienced by the Merope on her voyage from Canterbury to London : — Had heavy squall February 9. On tho 12th the wind hauled back to N. by W., blowing hard, and on the 15th wind hauled to N.E. with falling barometer. The ship lay with part of the deck under water; the quarter boat and part of Ice bulwarks -were washed away. P. Murray, A.8., was washed overboard •while haluing on tho leo forebracO, and M. Allen, A.8., and J. W. Fox, fell from the foroyai'd overboard, and were drowned. Tho gale lasted till the 16lh, when it moderated. Passed in sight of Capo Horn March 4. Crossed the Equator April 7th, and arrived at Graveßend May 2. There is Borne talk of tho s.s. Wellington being placed on the West Coast, but we cannot say how far the rumor may be correct. We observe, however, that the company to which she belongs have tuken tho contract to convey the European and American mails from the Manukau to Tunmnki, Nelson, &c. ( so that there may be something in the report. — " Grrey River Argus."
