[to the editor of the independent.] Sir, — I am obliged to you for replying to A. Z., but wish to mention that tho answer you give him does not include the moat important fact, which i?, that it is tho surveying only which I have sublet. This forms only a portion of the work to bo done ; besides it, I have to mark the Hue out, plot tho surveys and sections, plan the line, calculate earth work, &c, and make the estimate. The payment for the wlmle of this is included in whut I receive per mile, which A. Z. supposes to be paid for survey only. — I nm, &c, John Rochfoet. Wellington, July 2/th, 1871.
