[Fbom G-beville's Telegbam Company Reuteb's Agents.] Dunedin, Saturday, At the Riverton election, M'Gillivray polled 171 ; Wetson, 36 ; Low, 27. In Regina v. Barton Mr Macassey applied for an adjournment for a week with a view to obtaining a further adjournment for a month to be applied for next week, his object being to give time to secure the presence of Mr Gisborne and certain officers connected with the telegraphic department, and also some gentlemen not present in the colony. He said he should be able to show the extreme importance of the presence of those gentlemen in the. preliminary inquiries; and he understood Mr Haggitt would not oppose the application. Mr Haggitt would not object to an adjournment for a week or eight days, but at the expiration of that time he should object to any further adjournment. He understood that the object was to supcena witnesses to prove justification, and in fact to endeavov to go iuto the truth of the libel, to show by the evidence of the officers of the Telegraph Department that the words of the libel were true. At the expiration of the term of adjournment, on behalf of the Crown, he should go into the evidence against the defendant and make out ajprima facie case, and he was prepared to contend that his Worship ought not to grant any further adjournment, on the ground that it was entirely beyond his power to go into evidence of justification ; therefore further adjournment was unnecessary and a waste of time. Mr Macassey said he was surprised at the declaration made, as he" understood that no objec- i tion would be made to the case being adjourned for a 'month, on being mentioned every eight days. Had it not been for that understanding, he should not have mentioned the application. After some further explanation the case was adjourned for a week. ; Invercargill, Saturday.
