CRICKET MATCH.

A CRICKET MATCH was played on Thursday las • between 11 officers and 22 men of H.M.S.S Charybdie, on the new cricket ground, Te Aro The weather was very favorable for the occasion and a considerable number of spectators, includ ing many of the gentler sex, were present. Thi result of the match proves that tho 22 men wen no match for their 11 opponents, and, judging bj the score, we should imagine that Messi-B Thoma Sargoaunt, Stewart, and Mallard wore themselve equal to tho whole team opposed to them. Messr Mallard and Thomas, proved themselves, both ai batters and bowlers, experienced cricketers ; bu there could not have been many of the mci practically conversant with this manly game Amongst the men, Ozzard and Pratt, both as bat ters and bowlers, deserve " honorable mention.' If the officers had' had a better long-stop, anc had been as good in the field as at the wickets, tin score of the men would not have shown so favor ably even as it did. They could not howevei guard their wickets against the superior bowlinj of Thomas, who bowled out nine and stumpec three in the first innings,°arid who in the seconc innings was almost as successful. The largesi score in the first innings on the men's side wn! obtained by Ozzard, who was caught by Sargeaunt from a ball by Thomas after scoring nine runs The largest Bcore by the men in the second in ninga was made by Kobins, who obtained 14 runs and then had to give up his bat, by having unfortunately got leg before wicket. The whole of the officers, with one or two exceptions, made very good scores, notwithstanding the number of fielders they had against them. The largest score was obtained by Mr Stewart, whe was bowled out by Ozzard, after having made twenty-eight runs. The next highest score was made by Mr Sargeaunt, who was bowled out by Pratt, after scoring twenty-one runs. The men went to the wickets first, to the bowling of Messrs Mallard and Thomas, and made a total 6core of 40 in their first innings, of which no less than 14 were byes. Captain Lyon and Mr F. A. Sargeaunt then handled the willow to the bowling of Ozzard and Pratt, the captain having been disposed of by a ball from Ozzard after making a score of five. Ninety-five was the total score made by the . officers in the first innings. In the second innings duck's eggs, as in their previous innings, were the rule, and runs on the part of the men were the exceptions. They •however succeeded in making a score of 63 runs, giving a grand total of 103 runs for the two innings, and leaving only nine runs for the officers to score in their second innings to secure the victory. These were obtained easily by Captain Lyon and Mr Graves ; tho officers thus winning with ten wickets to spare. The following is the score : — PIBSX INNINGS (lIEN's). G-.
