NEW BUILDINGS.

MESSRS. KIRKCALDIE AND STAINS' NEW PREMISES. Messrs. Kirkcaldic & Stains, the well known importers and linen drapers, of Waterloo House, Lambton Quay, aro now erecting most extensivo premises on the reclaimed land on the east side of the quay, adjoining tho premises erected by Mr j Burne, draper. This new drapery establishment will be one of the most extensive of the kind in New Zealand. Mr Toxward is the architect, and Mr Jolin Mackenzie, the builder. The amount of the contract is about £3500. We have seen the plans ; the building will undoubtedly be highly ornamental to our chief thoroughfare. Tho design reflects much credit upon the arcliitecfc. The proportions of the building ar« very ample. The frontage is 70 feet to the Quay and 62 feet to Johnston street. The elevation, which is very handsome, is in the Palladian (Italian) style and will be 41 feet high. The whole front of the shop facing the Quay will be of plate-glass, each sheet being lift high by 4ft wide. Tho second floor will have five windows facing the Quay and four facing Johnston street, surmounted by entablatures. The corners of the building will be decorated with pilasters and Corinthian columns. The elevations in both streets are surmounted with a Corinthian cornice, balustrades, and classic urns. The general effect will bo exceedingly good. The shop accommodation will be divided into three departments — viz., millinery, clothing, and general drapery. The centre shop will be devoted to the latter department (general drapery) : it will be 52ft deep and 48ft wide. The total shop area will be 70ft by 52ft or about 3500 square feet. The shop is lofty, being 16ft high in the clear. The ceiling will be divided into moulded panels. An immense skylight, 30ft by 18ft will light the back of the shop. Upstairs will be dwelling and other apartments, in all a dozen rooms 12ft high in tho clear, all lathed and plas- , tered, with cornices and centre flowers. The whole premises will be finished early in October. The land upon which the building is erected cost about £1000. KR TV. TURNBULL' S NEVf STORE. Mr Toxward has drawn plans for a new and extensive store for Mr W. Turnbull, merchant, on the Custom House Quay, opposite the Bank of Zealand ; it will contain four floors. The elevation is in the Italian style, the height of tho building being 46ffc by 50ft wide. Tho ground floor will contain five offices, the second and third floors are for storing drapery goods ; the basement being for heavy merchandise. Each floor is 50ffc by 50ft. The contract has been taken by Mr James Lookie, the amount being about £2000. The building will be completed early in December. JAMES'S FURNITURE WAREHOUSE. It will be remembered that the fire which occurred some months ago on Lambton Quay, destroyed the extensive premises of Mr W. James and several others. Mr James is now erecting a new building on the same site, and the works are \ being pushed on wifch the energy which usually characterises him. The frontage is about 50 feet. Mr Lockio is the contractor for tho building, i wliich will cost about £1000. Adjoining Mr | James's warehouse is the new Bhop of Mr Wilton, | butcher. I There are several other buildings in course of erection in the city, which wo shall take another ! opportmiity of noticing. .
