NELSON.

PROVINCIAL COUNCIL. The Council is still sitting and engaged in passing the yearly estimates. No reductions of any moment were effected, notwithstanding strenuous efforts on the part of the opposition to cut down official incomes and expenditure, and on the West Coast South West Goldfields especially. The dry dock question I was again brught up, and attention drawn to the fact that the Council's efforts in that direction had not been followed up by more tangible steps, as the passing of la3t year's I Dry Dock Guarantee Act would have war--1 ranted the town members to expect. On the motion of the member for the Amuri district, Mr Wigley, a sum of £1000, equal to that provided by the Canterbury Government for the same purpose, was voted towards the erection of a bridgo over the Hurunui river. It is a matter of congratulation that the important work, the want of which has been so long felt, will at last be commenced. WEST OOAST LAND SALES. I Considerable feeling has been elicited at Westport, Charleston, and other places on the West Coast, at the determination come to in the Provincial Council last week, that all sales of West Coast land shall continue to be held in Nelson. At Charleston a public meeting was held on the subject, when the following resolution was passed: — "That this meeting desires the immediate sale of the town lands of Charleston, and views with alarm the threat made by the Provincial Government to sell all the town lands of the South West Goldfields in the city of Nelson ; and protests against any such step being taken, either at present or any future period."
