Egmont has been engaged fco tow her off, and will leave porfc this morning for thafc purpose. We have been furnished with the following particulars respecting the accident :— The schooner Canterbury left Wellington on February lsfc, and brought up undor the lee of Cape Campbell on February 2nd, at 8 a.m., blowing a fresh breeze from S.S.E. At 8 a.m. on Monday, 3rd inst, wind hauled roand to E. by S., and blew ' a hurricane, very thick and heavy rain. At 2 p.m. wind suddenly chopped round fco N., and then to N.W. Afc 7.30 there was a very heavy squall, and at 9.30 it was supposed one chain had parted, as the vessel ran astern yery rapidly, the sea breaking very heavily at Mie time ; lefc slip everything, and steered for a break in tho cliffs ; took tho ground at about, twico the length of the vessel from the cliff. At low wator, after consulting with the mate and carpenter, and with their advice scuttled tho vessel fco keep her from striking afc high water, and she now lies apparently uninjured. News reached town yesterday fchafc fche two wool ships Star of Tasmania and Timaru wero ashore at Oamaru and Timaru respectively* The p.s. In addition to übout 1600 ounces of Thamcß gold, she took 330 bags wheat, 388 bundles and 85 bales flax, 1080 baga potatoes, and 10 cases kauri gum The same vessel also shipped a quantity of wines, spirits, tobacco, cordials, and other bonded goods. — New Zealand Herald. The hull of the Lady Darling steamer, which vessel was burned this season and sunk ahout two I mileß abovo Moama, was got up last week under the superintendence of Messrs Air & Co, and dropped down by them on Saturday evening to their timber-yard, opposite the Echusa Wharf, for repairs. Our readers will be glad to hear that hor machinery is very little injured, and with fche exception of the boiler, whicli was left behind, was all landed on tho wharf on Saturday evening. Tho whole, in fact, is said to be in good order. Some hundred cases of spirits, together wifch a large quantity of other goods were found ou board in good order, and wore landed afc Moama. The hardwood timber that was put in her fore parfc last season was very little damaged by the fire bnt the pine timber thafc was iot taken oufc aft was much charred ond will require to be replaced. —Argus.
