Lyttelton, December 14. Arrived — Noon, William Miskin, s.s., from the South. Port Cualmehs, December 14. Sailod — 7 a.m., Ethels, barque, for the Bluff. Bluff, December 14. Arrived — 7 a.m., Turarua, a.s., from Dunedin. . +- The Government steamer St Kilda, Captain Fox, sailed for tho East Coast of the Middle Island at 5 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, to commence the marine survey provided for by the General Assembly last session. If present arrangements are carried ont, the coast between Hurunui and Kaiau-ua will bo first surveyed ; then both sides of tho Kaikoura Peninsula, and afterwards the coast from Elaxboume to Capo Campbell. Tho expedition will then return to Wellington and afterwards proceed to survey the West Coast of tho Middle Island. Mr Woods, E.N., is in command, with Mr W. H. Pcllict for his - assistant. Mr Chapman, formerly of the Koyal Navy, has been appointed chief officer of the vessel. The s.s. Storm Bird, Captain Doile, arrived in harbor at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning. She left Nelson at 6 o'clock on Saturday morning, arrived at Picton at 4 in tho afternoon, sailed again at 8 p.m. and arrived hero as above. The s.s. Otago, Captain W. .J. O. Symons, 8.N.8-, arrived here at 11 a.m. on Sunday hißt. She' left Melbourne at 4 p.m. on tho sth, experienced first port of the passage fresh easterly winds, and the latter part calm, arriving at Hokitika at 10 p.m. on the 10th ; on the morning of tho 11th landed 96 passengers and 54 tons of cargo; and left at 7 p.m. for Greymoulh ; discharged passengers and 13 t<ns cargo ; left at 11.30 p.m., had a beautiful passage, and arrived at Nelson at 6.30 p.m. on the 13th ; sailed again at 11 p.m. on the 14th, and arrived here as abovo Mr Eaton, the purser, has obliged us with full files. She brings a large number of passengers for this and other ports. Tho s.s. Otugo on her last passage from the Bluff to Melbourne with the Suez English mails, experienced terrifio westerly weather, the barometer standing for two days at 28.80, but she nevertheless arrived at Melbourne early on the morning of the 28th, eight hours before the departure of the P. and O, Go's Bombay.

Wellington, Captain Holmes, sailed from Port Chalmers at 5.20 p.m. on- the 12th, aud arrived at Lyttelton at 3.30 p.m. the next day ; sailed from Lyttelton at 5.20 p.m. on Saturday, and came up to the Queen's wharf nt noon on Sunday. Experienced light north-easterly winds throughout tho voyage. The s.s. Egmont, Captain A. W. Jack, ar*'; rived at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. She left Auckland at 8 p.m. of the 12th ; arrived at I Tauranga at 12.30 p.m. next day ; sailed again at 3.20 p.m. and anchored in Napier roadstead at : 9.30 p.m. of the 14th; on the 15th landed and embarked mails and passengers, and sailed at 1 p.m. that day. Experienced fresh northerly winds and hazy weather that night, but at 2 a.m. the weather cleared up. Mr .Vringle, tho purser, has favored us with late files. Tho Egmont reports that, as she was leaving Napier harbor, tho ship Echunga was entering. Tho schooner Mosquito arrived on Sunday night with 15 tons of coal, part of the cargo of the wrecked barque Affiance, which had been washed ashore at Fitzroy -Buy. The coal was afterwards transhipped to the s.s. Otago. Further attempts will be made to recover a portion of the Affiance's cargo. The schooner Kauri, Captain Sayco, arrived in harbor on Sunday evening with a cargo of fruit, &c, from Raro tonga, which she left on the 20th November ; experienced very fine weather to Cape Palliser, so fine that the hatches were kept off to allow as much air as possible to tho fruit. Made Capo Palliser on tho morning of the 13th inst., and then fell in with a heavy N.W. gale, which lasted for three days. Tho Kauri left here on tho Sth September for a cruise among the South Sea Islands. She arrived nt Mungara nt noon of the 30th j. left again in the afternoon of the next day ; arrived at Rarotonga on tho afternoon of the 3rd October ; sailed on the sth ; arrived Toubouai at noon of the 22nd ; left on tho afternoon of the 23rd, and arrived at Tahiti on tho morning of the 20th; sailed on tho Ist November ; arrived at Raitea at noon of the 3rd; left on the sth, and reached Tupai on the 6th ; sailed on tho afternoon of the 7th j arrived at Atui on the afternoon of the 11th; left on the 12th ; and reached Rarotonga on the 16th Captain Sayce reports that the French Government at Tahiti havo placed at the disposal of Messrs Stewart aud Co., a large transport ship to enable that firm to get a fresh supply of stores from Auckland, as they had lost nearly all their stock by fire some time previously. Tho schooner Zillah was met with at Toubouai, Tahiti, and Rarotonga ; the barquo Sea Shell at Atui ; and the Traveller at Rarotonga, shelling. The Nelson Colonist 6ays that during eleven months' trading between Nelson and tho West Const ports, tho Storm Bird has carried 700 head of cattle and over 3000 sheep, without the loss of either a hoof or horn. The s.s. Omeo was advertised to leave Melbourne for Wellington, Canterbury, and Nelson, on the 10th inst., and the s.s. Rangitoto on the 12th inst. Tho clipper screw steamship Somersetshire sailed from .Melbourne for London on tho 4th instant, with 124 passengers, a large cargo, including 7479 ozs gold from New Zealand. The schooner Florence, concerning whose safety many fears wero entertained, has arrived safely in Melbourne, after a passage cf over sixty days from Hokitika. The length of her voyiigo was caused through a succession of very heavy westerly gales, by which -she was forced to take shelter no fewer than four separate times under Swan Island. Tho s.s. Go-ahead, having failed to meet with n purchaser at Melbourne, left Hobson's Bay on the 30th ult., for Buller River, with a miscellaneous cargo. i A second survey has been held on the steamer Charles Edward, which lately went ashore at the Grey, and the result is that she is condemned to be sold for the benefit of all concerned. " The schooner Pioneer, supposed to have been lost on her passage from Dunedin to Okarita, was spoken by the Kennedy off Gillespie Beach, on the recent trip of the latter to relieve the suffering at Jackson's Bay. The Pioneer had been out seventy-seven days. Tho Henrietta, lately arrived at Melbourne from Foochow, reports a fearful cyclone at Hong Kong, causing great havoc amongst the shipping. Two steamers sunk at their anchors, one losing all handß. Several other vessels have been totally wrecked, by driving in-shore. Two French frigates outside the harbor were compelled to heave their guns overboard to save themselves. Several merchantmen were also lost outside. New York advices received at Melbourne state that the Ciiarina and Hazard, tor New Zealand, took 31,000 gallons kerosene, 85,000 feet lumber, and 20 tierces, 16361 b tobacco. At Boston, the A. W. Stevens and Hengist, wero loading for Melbourne, Lyttelton, and Otago.
