Melbourne. — The Argus of tho 14fch instant; says : — Rather a quiet day has been passed in the import markets, tbo arrival of fcho mail, but moro especially the uncertainty regarding shipments, having caused speculators and dealers to operate wifch extreme caution. A private telegram received in town states .— " Cotton is much lower, malt has advanced 2s, barley is dearer, copper is £1 per ton lower, sugar 15s to 20s per ton higher, and stocks rapidly decreasing ;" and another telegram states fchafc ifc is now ascertained beyond doubt; that the harvest all over England will be one-fourfcb below an average, and gives tbo pvice of new wheat afc 7s 6d to 8s 4d, and of old wheat according to quality. There are no sales to report in Hour, but wheat has been offering moro freely, without finding buyers. A small lot of 600 bushels was taken up for shipment at lato quotations. Oats and barley do not attract notice. Maize is firm at 3s Id to 3s 2d. The Swordfish, just arrived, brings a cargo from Clarence river. Sugars have met with a very free sale. Under the hammer 4,644 baga Mauritius realised prices fully equal to late sales, while an advance was established on white crystals. Of tbe Helene's cargo of Bourbon sugars, comprising 7,000 bags, aome 5,000 bags wero quitted at an improvement. Rations brought £23 5s to £23 10s ; browns, £26 10s ; and line yellow counters, £31 10s to £22 6s. A line of Cossipore sugar was placed at £46. In teas little has been done privately. By auction, however, the balance of the Hans' cargo of this season's nieb with a favorable reception, fcho whole amounting to 364 chests, 664 halfchests and 145 boxes, having been disposed of at prices ranging from ls 3id to 2s lid in bond. In provisions we note sales of Varcy's hams afc 13".-d. Some fifty bales of cornsacks wero disposed of, in parcels, afc prices rising fco 13s lid. In oils We observe more inquiries for kerosene, and business is meant too. Au offer of Is 9 id for 1,500 cases Devoe's oil was refused, fcho difference being a mere trifle. Sales of currants are mentioned ab 4-J-d to 4\&. Rock salt has been placed at equal fco £6, duty paid. Trade sales of Patna rice are effected at £30. Fino tobaccos are still wanted. A shipment of Peach and Honey half-pounds and a line of fifty cases aromatic pounds, afc fair rates, are amongst the sales referred to in the market. In liquids we hear of a considerable parcel of red wines having been placed at £19. . Sales of Burnett's eld torn have been made at 14s. Eight hundred cases Byass's sfcoufc have changed bands on private terms. Eight hundred and fifty cases Barclay's porter were sold publich , at 6s' 6d to 7s lid. Sales of Machen's are report ed afc equal to 9s 3d, and pig stout, has been quitted afc 10s. Sydney.— Telegrams of the 13th state :— Trado is quiet. Sales of Tahitian sugar have taken place at £33 15s. Maize is dull. The Walter Hood cleared for London, with 12,300 bale's wool, 4,287 bags wheat, 308 bales cotton, 208 casks tallow. Adelaide — From telegraphic advices of tbe 13th we learn thafc the commercial news by fche mail is considered favorable. Large wheat orders have been received, and prices aro consequently firmer. Sales 4s lid, bufc most parcels aro withdrawn from tho market.
