Independent Office, Friday evening. SIUCE our last summary, business has slightly improved, ana as stocks are now getting lower, prices may be expected to advance, bub we do not anticipate this state of things for any length of time, as we have two vessels from London with large cargoes now due, and we observe that shipments to Australia have been excessive for the last few months, and it is expected that a portion of these goods will be Bent into the New Zealand markets. Under those circumstances, we are afraid importations for some considerable period will not bring in satisfactory returns. Large supplies for tho wool growers will be wanted for tho next few months ; this will, to a certain extent, relieve the market. Considerable parcels of goods havo boon sold by auction during the past month, at pricos hardly to be considered satisfactory. The wool season commences next month, and the clip i 3 likely to be a very good. Monetary affairs continue as before. Bills are met with great regularity. Discount continues afc 8 per cent., bub might be lowered in conßOquence of the low rafco in tho home market, some of the Banks in Sydney havo lowered their rates during the past month. Porter in bottle— Moderate stocks- Bloods, 11s 9d ; Byass', 11s. Martell's brandy— Moderate stocks, at 7s (dark is rather scarce). Rum— Usual supply, 10 0.p., afc 3s sd. Whisky — Not much in demand, owing to a considerable quantity being made in tho province. Scotches worth -is ; Mehan's Irish, ss ; and Dunville's Irish, 6s Gd. Old Tom — Very scarce ; worth from 10s 6d to 18s, according to brand. Geneva— Stocks- moderato ; 13s 6d for JDKZ and key brand. Wines — If of good quality, are saleable at paying rates ; but inferior kinds cannot be disposed of at any price. ' Candles have beoD gold at auction as high as 13£ d per pound, duty paid, but could now bo purchased at easier rates. Oilmen's Btoies, &c, can only be quitted afc low rates and' in small quantities. The demand for this class of goods has decreased considerably ; the only article that is scarce is Eleme raisins. Butter — First class samples only caa bo placed at from Is to Is 2d per ib. Bacons and Hams — No demand. Potatoes — Scarce ; worth £8. Fat Cattle are likely to be in good demand for the next few mouths.

Wethers, in good condition aud fit for the butcher, are very saleable.
