The steamship Mataura before leaving Sydney made her usual trial trip for the purpose of teating the vessels spoed and tho working of the engines, which have undergone a complete overhaul at the engineering establishment of Mr McArthur. The 29th of August was tho day appointed ,• at 3 p.m. the ship loft her moorings, appearing in perfect trim and order ; she had on board 1180 tons of coal, drawing 20 feet 4 inches forward, and 20 feet 8 inches aft. She proceeded down the harbor, ran a short distance outside the Heads and returned prepared to run the measurod mile, which was accomplished in 4 minutes 32 BOQondß, giving a speed of 13£ knots per hour. The result of the trip proved highly satisfactory, the speed obtained was found to bo the greatest rate yet obtained by any screw steamer in Sydney harbor. She leaves far this present voyago with every chance of making a very rapid passage. Her accommodation for passengers, both first and second class, is perfect ; she is provided with every means conducing to their comfort equal to tho voyage she is about to proceed on.
