TOWN BOARD.
The first meeting of the Board of Works since the election, was held at three o'clock yesterday afternoon, when the following Commissioners wer» present : — Messrs Dransfleld, I'liinmer, Pharazyn, Mills, Quin, Hunter aud Borlaao. CHA.EB3IAK. Mr Dransfield was unanimously re-elected Chairmau of the Board for the ensuing year. The appointment of a Treasurer was deferred until Mr Bishop, who had intimated liU intention of resigning, sent in a formal resignation, in writing. VOITTHTEEE ABTIIiEBY. Mr Eustace Brandon waited on the 'Commis* aionera with a request that the Volunteer Artillery Company might be allowed the use of the Market Hall as a drill-ahed. It was resolved that the request be acceded to; and that the Market Hall should bo at the service of the Artillery Company until required by the Board. EBSIONATIOK. Mr Mantoll forwarded his resignation as a member for Thorndon Ward. JIBE DBiaADB. In reply to a communication from the Secra« tary of the Fire Brigade, it was resolved that tho pecuniary aid hitherto granted to the Brigade by the Board should be continued, tho Commis« sionei'S having no objection to tho officers elected by the working members of the corp9, aud being satisfied with the provisoes made by the Insuranoa Agents in continuing their donations. BATES. It was resolved that tho rate for the ensuing year should be the same as that levied during tha past year, viz., one penny iv the pound on all rateable properties. FINANCIAL. The Chairman announced that about £700 were due from tho past financial year, that tho balance in tho Bank amounted to £47, and tho liabilities to £1147. It was resolved that Messra R. Pharazytfj 1 Hunter, and Plimmor, wait upon the Superintend i dent with a request for an allowance of £1000. NUISANCE. Mr Borlase brought to the notice of the Com* missioners the fact of a stench casting ■ between Ling's shop on the Beach and the Club House. The Inspector of Nuisances announced that ha had already mentioned the fact to tho police, as the nuisance was occasioned by men emptying night soil on the beach just above high wateu mark. BEDtTCTION OF • EXPENDITURE. It was resolvod on tho motion of Mr, Plimmeif that all the laborer^ at present in tho employ of tho Board bo dismissed, with the exception of tlia gunmen, ono carpenter, two laborers for Te Aro> and one for each of the other wards. KETOBN. Mr Plimmer moved for a return of all monios spent in each ward during last year, that is, up to tho 31sl August, and likewise tho sums spent on general works. OITr SUEVEYOB. Mr Quin moved that the services of the City Surveyor will not be required after the end of the current monlli. The consideration of the motion was postponed until next sitting day, when the vacancies in the Board would be filled up. 1 The meeting then adjourned.
