COMMERCIAL.

Canteebury. — The Evening Mail of the 16th reports : — The fine and seasonable weather during tho past week has been largely taken advantage of for the housing and stacking of grain, consequently the thrashing machine has scarcely commenced operations, notwithstanding the meeting of buyers ; and sellers at market to-day lias been equal in number to the whole previous attendance. A fair show of new wheat ; btit many samples in bad condition. Some needy producers submitted to 3s and 3s 3d cash. Something more was offered on terras for speculation and shipment. No sole 9 of new barley came under notice; many samples brought forward; but maltsters seeking choice parcels, defer at present to fix prices, which are nominally 5s to 5s Gd. An increased show of now oats, but of a very second-rate quality. Many buyers remain unprovided, waiting for better samples. Oats, 3s 3d ; second quality, 3s ; inferior, without quotations ; grass hay, £4 10s to £5 ; potatoes, £4 10s to £5. Dunedix.— The Daily Times of the 13th reports : — With importers business continues very quiet indeed ; in fact there is scarcely anything going forward, except among second houses for miscellaneous country and coastwise orders. A considerable transaction in Chilian flour is reported ; but the price has not been nllowed to transpire. Excepting this sale, the demand is small, and confined to trifling trade parcels. Teas and sugars arc trifling, but to no extent. Spirits and malt liquors very dull. Quotations have not altered sensibly, nor has the la^t intelligence to hand caused any change in the prospects for any staple commodity.
