FIGHTING AT PANAMA.

Later news has been received from Panama via Sydney. The Panama Stay of March 29, says :— " On Saturday night, about halfpast ten, a party of about 150 men, under one Segurbia, entered the cityin small squads armed with matches, and proceeded to the barracks, with the intention of seizing the arms there, and afterwards capturing the guard at Las Monjas, and finally possessing themselves of the city. Their movements •were well known to the authorities, and the rebels were intentionally led into a trap, where many of them were killed and the rest taken prisoners. * * * * * Six of the rebels and one soldier, whose head was cut open in a fearful way, were .killed on the spot ; others fell over the wall into the sea, and were either washed away by the tide or carried off by their friends, and some twenty were badly wounded besides about 100 prisoners. Outside the walls, also, where a Government guard was stationed, several persons were shot, among them an unfortunate Jamaica woman, who, whilst sitting at her door, had a ball pass right through her head, killing her instantly. So far as we can learn, about seventeen persons, all coloured people, were killed, altogether, though there may be many more who have not been heard of.

TkoopS. — " Wo are informed" says the Southern Cross, "that; previous to leaving Auckland for Wellington, Major-General Chute gave instructions that no further steps should be taken during t-he winter months for the removal of troops to England, with the exception of the Royal Artillery, at present under orders for embarkation.

Council Chamber would be divided into two stories, and form Government Offices. The estimated cost of the whole including other necessary alterations, is £11,500.

Bellamy's. — Bellamy's was opened during the month, under (he management of Mr. Osgood, of the Empire Hotel. His past reputation as an hotel manager is tho best guarantee that ho will give every satisfaction to the members during the present session.

Importation.— Messrs. Belhune & Hunter have received eight very fine Leicester ewes by the ship Weymouth.

The Anniveiisary ov American Independence — From 8 to 10 o'clock ou the night of the tlie 4th .July, the City Band, stationed in the balcony of "Osgood's," discoursed eloquent music to a large crowd of people who had assembled to enjoy it.
