OTAGO.

The correspondent of the Canterbury Press writes : — A little bit of political gossip is afloat to the effect that the Superintendency of Otago will very shortly become vacant by the resignation of Mr Harris, who, on the same authority, will be appointed Crown Prosecutor, vice James Howorth, Esq., resigned. Another version is, thafc Mr Harris is to be the new judge in the Court under the recent extension of jurisdiction to £100 and under. Of course people are busily speculating as to the probable future occupant of the Superintendential chair, and the names of Mr Macandrew, Major Richardson, and Mr Thomas Dick, aro freely mentioned. In the event of Mr Macandrew offering himself, he would, despite his previous laches, have a large amount of support, and run any ' other caudidato a hard race. Still, if tlie j gallant Major is not too much enamoured of I General Government honors to offer hhrself again for his old post, I think there would be small doubt of his being elected. With reference to the published list of awards to the exhibitors at tho late Exhibition, I am in a position to state that the name of one Canterbury exhibitor, Mr .Ballon, of Christchurch, was accidentally I omitted. Mr Button received an award for his specimens of graining. The Exhibition building is now almost denuded, and will be i finally oufc of tho hands of the Commissioners iv a l'e\y days. By the bye, her Majesty's Secretary of State for India has unwittingly l thrown a nice little bone of contention in respect of the ultimate disposal of the valuable Indian collection. It appears that, save and except some few arlicles which were desired to be returned, the collection was presented to the Commissioners, in the hope " that it might form the nucleus of a local museum," if such did not already exist. Query : Does the term local apply to the colony or the particular province of Otago P I Meantime the collection is to remain in ' Dunedin, and will no doubt bo stuck to if possible. The weather is boisterous and uncomfortable, and Dunedin rejoices in its pristine condition of mud. Trade is dull. j | THE MURDER OF CHARLIE THE GERMAN. From the Pa ily Times of the 14th, we learn that William Ford was found Not Guilty of the murder of George lCreuzer (" German Charley,") in High Streot, on the 30th March last ; and he was discharged from custody by Mr Justice Richmond. The Crown Prosecutor declined to offer evidence on the indictment against Ellen Anderson ; and she was formally found Not Guilty, and acquitted. The Court was crowded, especially during the evening ; when a number of persons who sought admission were unable to enter. THE JAEVEY CASE. The same papor of fche 25fch says that the celebrated Jarvey trial was to be commenced on the 19th inst. Ifc further observes : — We understand that a telegram has been received in town, from Christchurch, stating that Dr 1 Macadam is nofc a passenger by the Albion, and that medical certificates will be received by post, to the effect thafc when the steamer left Melbourne, Dr Macadam was not in a fit condition of health to travel.
