THE SEAT OF GOVERNMENT QUESTION.
The Advertiser has a very stupid and rather impertinent paragraph in its last issue, referring to our article on the Seat of Government question, which may possibly mislead a few people. The whole case lies in a nutshell. The Assembly wished the question to be finally settled by the Commissioners, the capital city fixed upon, the site for the buildings chosen, and the buildings themselves erected thereon forthwith. In the suppressed paragraph of their address, they request, to quote their own words, " that immediately upon receiving the report of the Commissioners so appointed, your Excellency willbe pleased to cause the site recommended by them, forthwith tobe procured and the necessary buildings for the residence of the Governor, for the offices of Government, and for the meetings of the General Assembly to be forthwith erected." This implies that the Commissioners were to select a site for the buildings. If it does not mean this, how can the Governor " procure the site tobe recommended by them ? " Is he to procure the whole of Wellington, and is the Assembly to vote the money for buying it all P As we said on Thursday, we do not anticipate any serious difficulty will arise, in consequence of this omission. The further arrangements will doubtless be mado by Sir George Grey, at the request of the Assembly immediately after the meeting of that body. But the fact that something has still to b© done in a matter so important, affords a strong reason why all the Wellington and Canterbury members as well as all others who have the interests of the Colony at heart should be a<their posts.
