jtbovincial Council. — At the bitting 01, this Council last night, a great deal of tune was occupied in Committee upon the motion of Mr De Castro for the establishment of a market. The adjourned debate on Mr Bor-« t lasses amendment that the " Second Reading of the Maintenance of Roads Bill shouldtake place that day six months," was proceeded with, and after a long debate the House divided. The numbers were — Ayes, 13. Noes, 11. Majority 2. The Bill was read a second time, and ordered, to be read a ' third time wish amendments on Thursday* The Patent Slip Site Bill and the Wairarapa Race Course Bill were read a third time. On the motion of Mr Dransfield, the width of the main street along Lampton Quay : is . not to be less than 100 feet. The petition presented by Mr Gr. Allen praying for a piece of land for the use of the Foresters, was read and the prayer granted. Presentation. — We perceive 'that it: is the intention of No. 2 Company of Militia to present to Captain Carkeek a very handsome piece of plate, at the Odd FeUows' Hall next Wednesday. Coptain Carkeek's duties ia : the militia have been decided by the General Grorernment as inconsistent with his duties as Collector of Customs, and No. 2 Company have thus lost a very efficient officer. The presentation consists of a claret jug, and is the handsomest article that could be purchased in Wellington. Major Gorton na§, we believe, promised to preside. Public Meetingk — A public meeting of the electors is to be held on Monday evening, the 20th inst, to consider the provisions of the Representation re-adjustment\Bill,- now before the Council. The meeting will take place in the Lyceum Theatre at -half-past seven o'clock. As the question is one of great importance, we trust the electors will attend largely, and express their, opinions : freely thereon. W.R.V. Company. — A notice, elsewhere requires this Company to attend « battalion drill, on Wednesday next at half-past. two o'clock, on the parade ground Mount Cook.
