ON SALE, i _____ i I 1 12 Horse Tower High Pressure Steam Engine with Boiler and Fittings complete 1 14 do. Portable Steam Engine with Boiler and Fittings complete W. & G. TURNBULL & Co. Wellington, sth Oct., 1861. NEW ZEALAND STUD BOOK. AS it is proposed to publish, early next year, a STUD BOOK for New Zealand, per-ions possessed of thoroughbred horses, who wish to have tbeir stock recorded in the pages of the work in question, are requested to furnish the undersigned, as soon as possible, with the fullest particulars they possess of tbe breeding of their hoises. The prreat and increasing interest shown in all the provinces in the breeding of thorongh-bred horse stock, renders a work of tbe above character highly desirable, aa, without it, in a few years the pedigrees of many valuable animals will be altogether lost, so that it will be impossible nt any future time to certify to the blood of their descendants. From the circumstance that, until quite recently, no Stud Book was ever published in New South Wales, to wbich colony New Zealand is so largely indebted for its horse Btock, it has already . become difficult to [trace the pedigrees of many of our supposed thorough-bred horses to the English Stud Book, the only recognised authority of a horse's purity of bceed. .Much, however, maybe done by research and inquiry to clear up doubtful pedigrees if the task is at once undertaken, but the longer the work is daferred the greater will be the difficulty of ultimate success. The following is given as specimens of the form in which the Editor of the work wishes information to be furnished him, or as nearly so as circumstances will permit :— (1). REGALIA, bay mare, bred by Mr. Icb_y, of New South Wales," and imported to Nelson by Mr. REnwooD, in 1852; got by St. John (E.T.8.), out of Rakish Kit, by Emigrant (E.T.8.), g dam Spnewife (E.T.8.) 1853, b c InVerman, by Sir Hercules'! 1854, missed to Sir Kercules M /-i an _i AY 1855, r f Emerald, by Lamplighter ' mr# VjßUue J r 1856, missed to Sir Hercules } 1857, b o Royalty, by Chevalier "1 1858, missed to II Barbiere ] 1859, b c llegnvm, by St. Aubiu >Mr. Elliott. 1860, missed to Potentate j 1861, b f t by Towton j (3). England by Mr. S. Hawke, got by Melbourno, dam Ginizelli, by Touchstone, g dam Bracade, by Pantaloon. Melbourne by Humphrey Clinker, Imported to New Zealand in 1858. . The intials, E.T.8., signify English thorough, bred, and, where used, show that the horse to wbich they apply was bred in England, and may be found iv the English Stud Book. As a New Zealand Stud Book will be a work of great'value to all breeders of thoroughbred horses in the colony, and will, hereafter, be a standard book of reference, it is hoped that persons haviug thoroughbred stock, or what are supposed to be so, will lose no time in furnishing the Rditor with the fullest information they possess respecting them. Where pedigrees of colonial-bred horses are defective, the Editor will endeavour, when practicable, to render 1 them perfect. The -New Zealand Stud Book will be uniform in size and style with tbe English Stud Book, and contain in addition to those of our. own colonial horses, the pedigrees, as far as they can be pro--* cured, of all thoroughbred stallions and mares imported into Australia, from which so lare a portion of our own stock are descended; and to render reference; to the English Stud Book, which is not always at hand, os little necessary as .possible, pedigrees will be carried back to well-known sires and dams of English horses, so as to show the particular strains of blood our horses posiess. The, price of the work to Subscribers will be £1 Is., to no'n-Subscricers, £1 lis. 6d. Subscribers are requested to send iv their names, so that they may be printed with the work. C.
