CAUTION TO SMOKERS.

(To the Editor of the Wellington Independent.) Wellington, 30th Oct. 1861. Siß,—*-Som,etime since I. purchased a Meershaum washed pipe and not Jiking the Indiarubber mouthpiece threw it away. On the three or four occasions of my smoking this pipe, I felt so ill that I speedily threw it after its mouthpiece. In the last Home iV-MW "there is an extract from the Times, which you ought to reprint. It states that these pipes are washed with a preparation of arsenic and that when allowed to touch the lips in smoking all the symptoms ofarsenical poisouingare experienced. As the India-rubber band intended for a mouth piece is generally dispensed with by smokers here, they ought to be cautioned against the consequences. I may state that I know of other instances besides my own, where very disagreeable effects have followed. Your constant reader Pipe.
