The LC.R.M. Company's s.s. Prince Alfred, Capt. Bowden, arrived in this harbor on Sunday last from Lyttelton and Otago. . She has experienced fine weather during the wholo of her trip to the southward. Mr. and Mrs. Northwood, who have been absent from Wellington about two years on a visit tb the mother country, are passengers by her via Otago. The s.s. steamer Omeo, left ; Lyttelton for Melbourne, calling at Otago, on Saturday. The.Trince Alfred sails for Sydney via Nelson and' Taranaki at tbree o'clock this afternoon. The mail by her closes at noon. The Wonga Wonga sails at six p. m. for Picton and Nelson, ancl a first-rato opportunity wll be afforded of forwarding a supplementary mail, as she will reach Nelson before the Prince Alfred leaves. The Otago Witness of the 29th tilt, says : — "Our arrivals this week have been numerous;* On Sunday the steamer "Pirate" came in from Melbourne with the English October mail, having been only absent from Port Chambers some 21 days. ; She brought 12 passefigors and large cargo, including 100 sheep and 14 horses. On Monday , the "Chile," from London, with 114 passengers, all well, and a large miscellaneous cargo. We havo also had the " Armin," from Melbourne with 8396 sheep, 7 horses, and an emu, a rather singular importation ; also, another steamer for tbe North- ooast,- the s.s. Storm Bird, with 10 passen-

gers and a general cargo ; the Sultan and Lizzie Spalding with sheep, and the Adelaide with general cargo. The fine steamer Omeo, Oaptain John McLean, anchored in our harbour a little after midnight on Wednesday morning, from Melbourne via Otago. The Omeo is a very haudsome iron boat, built in 1858, at Gateshead-upon-Tyne ; she measures 240 feet in length, registers 605 tons without ber engine-room, and has auxiliary screw power equal to 100 horses. Her lower ma3ts and rigging are made of iron, and the raizen mast does double duty as funnel to the fire of tbe after saloon. The fittings of the Orneo are tbe most complete and comfortable of any steamer .which has yet visited us. Her main saloon is amidships, out of the motion, and sleeping -accommodation for passengers cannot be surpassed. She carries beneath 300 tons of coal, and bas room besides for 500 tons of cargo, part of her stowage room being constructed as an immense tank into wbich 300 tons of water may be pumped at pleasure as ballast. The Omeo put ashore 200 tons of cargo, 1000 slieep, witb 30 passengers, in six hours at Port Chalmers. She returns this afternoon to I_elbourne via OtagO, and will visit this port next month, baying a contract to make three trips with stock to Otago. — Lyttelton Times. .
