by high fern. Ifc was here that the natives maintained their ground against the bayonet, and that the hottest part of the fight took place. 9,9. Natives arriving from the bush in support of those near the pa, taking the troops in rear and flank and causing them to retire in direction 11. 10, 10. Advance of Natives on troops as they retired from their second position (3), in which advance they were cheeked by the fire of grape from the guns brought into their new position, 12. 11. Direction of the retirement of the main body of troops from their previous position, 3, in consequence of no reserve coming up. 12. Position of guns checking the follow of the natives. 13. Flat, scrubby, open country. 14. Heavily wooded country, the head quarters of Wi Kingi's adherents.
