THE LATE MR. WICKSTEED.

Saturday's Mail from Wanganui, brings us intelligence of the death, on tike evening of Sunday, the 15th inst., •of J. T. Wicksteed, Esq., of that place. To the old Colonists of Wellington, Mr. "W-ICKSxeed was- well "known, being for some time Editor of the New Zealand Gazette,, in which office the proprietors of thisjournal then worked. After the •departure of Captain Liardet, the New Zealand Company's Agent at Taranaki, Mr. Wicksteeb was appointed to suc r ceed him, from whence he finally settled in Wanganui, where he relieved the duties of his farm by those of Editor to the Wanganui Chronicle. In that paper a friendly hand has within the last' few days sketched his many good qualities. Unfortunately these were not without aome alloy of the baser metal of our nature. In all of us the fine gold becomes more or less dimmed — how much of the genuine metal there was in Mr. WiokStbed's character the following "extract shows.

M Ever, wisely to suggest, and energetically to forward and uphold the best interests of bis fellow-settlers and adopted country ; kuown throughout New Zealand and in other lands for his talent {open, free, and upright in bis bearing ; a .sound and finished scholar ; an able and conscientious magistrate; richly gifted with generous emotions and the kindliest feelings for all— such was Mr. VVicksteed."
