THE Wellington Independent. Tuesday, January 17, 1860. THE GENERAL "ASSEMBLY.
The rumour published in our last, relative to the next meeting of the Assembly, has about it a sufficient semblance of foundation to induce us to give it partial credence. Were none of the other provinces concerned, we could readily believe it ; but as the dragging so many members from the South would involve a large amount of uncalled for personal inconvenience and loss, we are doubtful whether the ministry are sufficiently foolhardy to incur their irritation, merely to postpone an event which must some day or other inevitably take place. Should the Assembly meet at Auckland, we are not likely eventually to suffer by the loss of the temporary prestige. Our eight members will not fail to be at their posts, and the injustice done us will then be made so patent to the Colony, that the Ministry must be irretrievably damaged thereby. The next session is looked forward to as a most important one, yet the want ot concert in the opposition is such as to prevent any definite plan of operation, being .formed beforehand. The ministry will be prepared with numerous measures, not so numerous perhaps as those of 1858, but equally affecting the individual welfare of the Provinces and that of the Colony as a whole. Until the ministerial measures are brought before the House, it will be next to impossible to define the details of the policy that will be arrayed against them... The leading features of the policy of the Stafford Ministry are well known : equally so are those of the leaders of the opposition. With this limited knowledge we must content ourselves, as it can be only after personal conference at the time and place of meeting, thut the heterogeneous views
! of the oppositionrrepresentatives of each province can be consolidated into an effective whole. A " hasse of impenetrable mystery " hangs over the future, which nothing present can penetrate*
