THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY—IMPORTANT IF TRUE.

There is one item of new 3 from Auckland by the White Swart s mail, which, if true, culminates all previous acts of injustice towards this Province. The Examiner gives publicity to a rumour that the next meeting of the General Assembly will not be hplden in Wellington ; that one or two influential rnsmbers of the Ministry have declared positively that they will not come down here ; and that the preparations which have been making in the shape of selection and package of documents &c, have been stopped. The " little bird "of the Examiner has, on more than one previous occasion, conveyed authentic political information weeks previously to the other papers, and it will not surprise us if it shall turn out that there is a foundation for the statements now made. But that such a flagrant breach of faith will be carried into execution we can hardly bring to believe. The Governor ■»«&» 'Ms individual capacity, stands publicly and solemnly pledged to call the Assembly in Wellington, and cannot shift the responsibility of not doing so to the shoulders of his Ministry. They may possibly do, as it is said they did when they differed about granting a dissolution of our Provincial Council — threaten to resign; but his Excellency can surely find men enough to carry on his government, without being compelled continually to succumb to the disgrace of violating promises deliberately made. On the Governor's return from Lyttelton the question must at once be decided. We are glad, meanwhile, to find that, the Stafford Ministry are not hopelessly lost ; that they have such a consciousness of the injuries they have endeavoured^ to inflictVdn this Province, that they are' ashamed to meet its inhabitants. Let us Hope that their sense of shame will prove a true one and lead them to make amends for the past. The following is the announcement made by the Examiner, of the 7th inst. "We have been taken by surprise a shoit time back in consequence of a rumor which has been spreading about — to the effect that the General Assembly will not meet in Wellington, as was expected. We were inclined ourselves to discredit the report, but we were led to understand that the preparations which were being made by the government — such as the selection of papers, and books, and puokiug them up has been stopped. We also heard that one or two influential members of the ministry have declared posi. tively that they will not go to Wellington. Many strange things occur. This may turn out one among the rest. We give it just" as we heard iL ; Time will show whether we have it, on reliaulfecdftlthority or not.
