THE "Wellington Independent." Wednesday, April 20, 1853.

Since our last, issue two important meetings have been held in this Province, one at Barrett's Hotel on Monday last, at 12 o'clock, to preseut Dr. Featherston with a requisition from his fellow-settlers to allow Inms'aJf to be put in nomination for the office of Superintendent of this Province; aud the other at the Aglionby Arms, Hutt, on Monday evening, for tho purpose of receiving the report of tho Committee appointed ata formermeoting, to Tequest cortain gentlemen to allow themselves to bo put in nomination for Members of tlie Provincial and Legislative Councils, for that district. BBoth meetings were numerously and most respectably attended, and the greatest unanimity prevailed. :

As full reports of both meetings will bo found in to-day's paper, little more is required at our hands than to direct the readors attention to them.

As a matter of course, Dr. Feathorston's declaration of principles, which

wits looked forward,to by many with much anxiety, at once proved tlie falsehood '6(. the rumours circulated as to the political opinions bf that'gentleman, and we heed hardly say that nothing could be more complete than the refutation given to; those slfiiiders—;that Dr. Featherston was listened to throughout his able and eloquent address with the most".profound, attention, and the principles enunciated by him met with the warmest approval of •all present,.' The meeting at the Hutt was also oi an important character, aiid'a new fea- ( ture in these meetings was the attenditnance of Mr., Fit/.lierbei't, who_ explained his views: upon many political subjects, much to the satisfaction of his brother elector's. That hateful system of Nomineeism came under the lash of Mr. Fitzherbert, and; received its due. Indeod, we are at loss to understand how persons who have once wedded themselves to such a system, can how come forward ;and ask the settlers to,elect them under Free Institutions, It has only beeu through the 'conduct of Nomineeism ;(the obedient tools and puppets of Sir George Grey), that the settlers have bfeeti so long deprived of their, political privileges, aud we should think that the settlers will never so stultify themselves as ■to, elect any of them as members of either the Provincial or Legislative Councils.

The Annual Licensing meeting was held at the Police Court on Tuesday last, when the following applications were granted, viz.:— ' ' ~ C.E.'Vou Alzdorf, Wellington Hotel. Mary Ann Ames, South Sea Hotel. Thomas Allingtou, Commercial Hotel., W. Bannister, Crown & Anchor Tav. ■Richard Barry, Te Aro Hotel. ' ''. 7 Charles Brown, Thistle Tun. ' " _'_ .' George Buck,' Travellers' Rest, Taiti. James Calder, Rainbow Tavern. William Cattle, Nagg's Head Inn. John Clarke; Highlander Inn.

Meecb, Caledonia Hotel, and William M'Keuzie, Eagle Tavern, were adjourned for consideration until Tuesday next.

We call the attention of the Editor of the Spectator to the list or the names of the "few friends" of Dr.' Featherston.'
