AUCKLAND EXTRACTS.

• A ■Gooornme.nl Gazelle, was issned yestorduy, which, although it .does .not ]ish any notification of striking political novelty or intorest, yet contains official doenments'which must have a high and gratifying , importance in tho estimation' of all who watch with friendly-solicitude the progress of this district. Tho Exports of New Zealand produce from tho Port of Auckland during the-quar-ter ending January 5, amounted in value to £17,519 of whioh no less than £7,157 ■was for'sawn timber, — a commodity . which our forests can supply in almost 1 unlimited quantity. In tho enumeration ;wo find a product which—although it 3ia3 not yot assumod much magnitudo in • tho Returns, yet arrosls attention as a very interesting novelty,—"Gold Dust, 22 07.. [6} dwts.,—£Bo; Gold Suud and Quarts, 22lbs.—JS3-L." Tho imports of live stock and of tho principal kinds of provisions,'amountod to £0,126 10s. Hero wo nro again struck by tho item "Gold Dust and Spocinions of Quartz, —SO cmncos—£oo." Th« sale of Crown Lands is anotlior and .significant, index to tho iinprnviug stuto of tho district. In addition to the Return of the Auction Salo on tho, 1 Ith instant, we have another Return showing that, from tlio Ist of October to tho 31st Docomhor, the private sulos by the Colon in I Treasurer have roalizod within a triHo of, £-0,000. Tlio.Return of Immigration and Emi- ;. grutionfor tho Quarter also prosents gratifying results. The Immigrants . numbered 285, the emigrants 122, showing an .excess of immigration over emigrations!' 104. ;It. is truo that this was .partly owing to tho of a body of Enrolled Ponnioners.uut the number of Pensioners whom this -vary.--.Gazette -.names as purchasers of land affords additional proof of tho fact—which .'is.-now woll-known — that many ;of ■ this- class ■'•.-show thomsolvos industrious, intelligent and thriving-settlors. On tho Australian part of tho account, there is a loss : , in tho whole quarter, thoro having boon 112 emigrants to Now South Wales and -'vMelhinrno and only 95 Immigrants to Auckliiinl from thoso colouios; but in tho interval since tho;3lst ult., sover.il have returned, many more may inimodiutcly bo expected, and Uiero is little hazard, in ..predicting that tho curront ■ quarter-will show.a marked turning of the scale in this particular.— New Zealander, ■Jan;. 2o. '

Wiutheu/Groi's, ;&o. —Tho weather during tho past month has boon of a very favourable character for securing tho crops Tho earlier part of the month was rather wot, but as general harvest

only commenced with the fine woather, very little damage lias been dono, and we niny now congratulate the farmers upon having securqd tho most abundant crop of grain that has ever been grown in the district of Auckland. Tho farmers on both sidos of , ' tho Taniaki have grown fully ihciiMisual breadth of grain. .While : tho recently reclaimed district of Papa■ktira, now presents a scone which every well-wisher of Auckland may justly feel proud of. The district between Howick siitd Pukulu,,a distance of twelve to fiftoou • miles, is qnito studded with newly erected homesteads, and still moro newly erected stacks of grain. Wheat is .an excellent rcrop, a greater bulk of straw than usual, and the ears are sound and good. There ■is every prospect of an, abundant yield, of fino quality. Bnrley is an average crop, tho quality good, but tho breadth sown seems smaller than usual. Oats afo a-lighter crop than generally, which

may be accounted for by tho ground being too rocently broken up before sowing; at least two mouths are required to pulverize'the soil before it is.ftt to receive the seed with any certainty, of a good crop. Potatoes are a first rate crop, and a groat breadth planted. If tho demand contiiiuos for the AusDralian colonies, tho farmers will be well rewarded for their labour. Hay, is a good crop, and generally well saved. Pastures have been good all the summer, but are now suffering a little from drought. IThe Qukkn Street Wiiakf.—We are credibly informed that this magnificent Mud.Heap underwent a minute inspection of tho Surveyor and Doputy-Sur-1 voyor General on Tuesday last. What may be tho result of their united abilities, it would be bard to tell. Brace after ;braco, we hear, is parting'; and pile after pile continues-to be wormed through. We trust, that pending the preparation of the Surveyor's report,-tho mass may have the good manuors not to disappear. Is it not unpardonable that a competent report was not made lung since, and many thousands of tho colonial funds saved--from wanton destruction?"
