CANTERBURY.
JOURNAL OF THE WJJEK. (From the Lyttclton Times, February 15.) We 'have little of interest to record this week. Most of the passengers of the Castle Eden, have been lauded, which has increased, in some degree, the appearance of business and bustle in the place. People are, however, still waiting anxiously for Monday next, when the purchasers will be put in possession of their land.
The markets continue much in the same state as last week.
The workmen have commenced macadamizing the streets ; a most important work, not only to save the inhabitants from the clouds of dust, which prove so great an annoyance at present, but also to save the roads, the surface of which is now composed only of clay, from being cut by the heavy rains in the winter.
The road from the Ferry over the Heathcote to Christ church is commenced in earnest. Sixty Englishmen and forty Maories are at work, the whole road is to he completed hy the 15th of April. The works have been opened in six places at once. A deep trench is dug on each side, and the earth thrown up in the middle forming an embankment on the top of which the road runs. The ditch on either side forms an effectual fence to the lands selected on either side; aud the earth thrown up in many places, proves the richness and fertility of the soil.
Those who have visited the roads, speak well of the progress made in the first week, and are highly pleased with, the manner iv which the work is perfornied,
Our harbour has lost its busy appearance to-day, a fair wind having tempted many of the craft to sail.
