The arduous exertions required to establish British law among the aboriginal natives of New Ztaland, end tosett'e the conflicting claims of colonists and native?, would prevent us from empioying the language of congratulation, were it not the true service of your country the known obj-ct of your Excellency's ambition. The eminent success which has attended the measures of your Excellency as Governor of South Australia, causes us to r< j >ice in your present appointment as an assurance of the good intentions of Her Majesty's advisers towards British settlers in New Zealand. We are (jlad of the conquest of the n itive tribes whohnd rtbelled against British authority, as it is an earnest of that protection being afforded, to which, as British subjects, we are entitled. We pray that by your exertions the prosperity of Hie colony may be finally established, so that the day of your arrival may become a justly celebrated I'eriod in its history. And we sincerely desire, that the welfare and happiness of your Excellency and Mrs. Grey may he promoted by your lemoval to New Zealand, and increßsed by the consideration that you have been the means of affording your countrymen a degree of security which they have never hitherto enjoyid.
