POLICE COURT.
Before Henry St. Hill, Esq., P. M. Monday, June 23, 1845. George Hurst of Wangaroa in the Chatham Islands, was brought up charged, by William M'Clatchie and Samuel Brown, with stealing 2 tons of rope, being part of the wreck of the American whaler Chelsea, wrecked on those islands, in the month of February last. The prisoner was brought up from the Chatham Islands, on a warrant issued by the Police Magistrate of Wellington. Mr. Hanson appeared for the complainers, and Mr. Ross for the prisoner. It appeared from the evidence of William M'Clatchie, that he (M'Clatchie) jointly with Samuel Brown, had purchased the rope at public auction at Wangaroa out of the schooner h,liza, and also some oil that came out of the Chelsea, and which was then lying on the beach at Tupunga. He left the wreck and oil so purchased in charge of one Thomas Grace. On or about the 3rd of April, the prisoner accompanied by two men named Henry Roily and — Johnston, took away by force about two tons of the rope. On cross-examination by Mr. Ross, the witness said that he knew Mr. Anketell, aud knew that he (Anketell) had previously purchased the wreck and oil of the Chelsea on certain terms, which he understood Anketell could not complete. On the part of the prisoner,—William Anketell stated, that he had, on or about the 3rd of February last, purchased the wreck and oil which was sold by public auction at Tupunga, where the wreck look place ; that he had made an agreement with the prisoner to bring the rigging belonging to the wreck from Tupunga to Wangaroa, and that he had received the rigging from Hurst. He considered it his property, as it was purchased by him and had been saved by him aud men employed by him, after the wreck broke up. The Magistrate dismissed the charge. Tuesday, June 24. William M'Clatchie and George Hempleman, were brought up, charged with an assault on George White Bennet, we shall furnish our readers with a report of this case in our next.
