AUCKLAND.
On Wednesday, 30th April, at AucklanJ, Captain G. A. Bennett, R.E., &c. &c. The death of this officer was not in the slightest degree suspected, as a likety event by any, but his medical attendants. Captain Bennett was only 38 years of age/, but in the colony, few, if any, were more respected. Not being a married man, he nevertheless invested a considerable capital in the country, and gave encouragement to others to follow his example. Captain Bennett ever set an example of being a colonist among us, as well as an officer of th& Government service, and doubtless, he will be much missed, by the Auckland people, even if it were only on that account. But his spontaneous kindness as President of the Mechanic's Institute, and his other encouragement by every useful purpose, or contrivance for the advancement of the colony, of course, made his sudden disappearance a loss to the place— a loss which* they cannot but deplore, especially at the present critical moment—when it is so necessary, and yet so difficult, to provide for the renewal of actual colonists. It is almost needless to add, that his Excellency the Governor and suite attended the funeral, which was performed with military honours. Almost all the inhabitants of the town were likewise present. Captain Bennett's father served in the Royal Engineers in Canada, and elsewhere. His mother survives her firrt husband, as well as her son, and is now the wife of Col. Brandreth. The Rev. Mr. Bennett, who has made himself conspicuous in the Oxford controversy— of latter days better known as the Puseyite dispute—is a brother of the amiable officer whose loss we deplore.— Auckland Times.
