“Dirt Money” Advancing a claim that prices for pig meats should be raised- as a means of increasing pig production, a delegate at the New Zealand Dairy Company committeemen’s conference in Hamilton on Tuesday said tnat the ruling prices were unprofitable for the amount of work, risk and money involved. “Workers in some other branches of industry get ‘dirt money’ for special work, and if raising pigs is not comparable with the work those claimers of dirt money do I don’t know much about it,” he declared, amid laughter. “We must take a firm stand or otherwise returned men will never secure their farms,” commented the deputy-chairman of the Waitoino County Council, Mr E. W. Larsen, at a county meeting in criticising the rate of development of areas controlled by the Lands Department in the district. He considered that the progress of the settlement of these lands could be considerably speeded up with a realistic approach to the matter, but the system was “tied up with red tape.” The chairman, Mr W. A. Lee, considered that the Lands Department had provided a substantial number of farms in the past, although he admitted that they had not appeared to have been so successful recently.
