HISTORY OF COROMANDEL
IYA TO BROADCAST NEXT THURSDAY FINE SINGING INTERLUDES On Thursday, April 22, at 8 p.m., IYA will broadcast the history of Coromandel. Mr Charles Woodward Hovell, J.P., will relate incidents of interest of as far back as 1872. The speaker, as a youth, served with his father, the late Colonel Dr. Charles Hovell, in the Maori Wars, and the speaker, who is still hale and hearty at 93 years of age, will deal with his many experiences during his life in Coromandel—experiences which helped in making the history of a once famous town.
The eight Brown sisters, of Coromandel, will render both European and Maori songs during interludes in this interesting programme. The sisters, who are full-blooded Maori girls, are considered by the director of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service to be one of the most outstanding finds in New Zealand, and arrangements are being made to have all their recordings, both present and future, the sole rights of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service. Amongst their many recordings made to date are: "Isa Lei,” “Roses,” yodelling songs, “Toia Mai,” “A. E. Titongo Kino E” and "ICoutou Katoa Ra” (hymn), etc.
