ACADEMY THEATRE

CURR EN T PROGR AMM E S Spencer Tracy, Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner —the most sensational combination of star names o ! f the year —in one of the most exciting, thrilling and suspenseful stories in all English literature, “Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde,” from the immortal pen of Robert Louis Stevenson. The film will show at the Academy to-night. In the dual characters of the good Dr. Jekyll and the evil Mr Hyde, Tracy adds another outstanding role to his Father Edward J. Flanagan of “Mon of Boys Town.” Miss Turner plays Beatrix Emery, sweetheart of Dr. Jekyll, a spirited girl defiant because convention forces a long engagement before she can wed her lover. Miss Bergman, noted Swedish star, plays Ivy Pearson, bar-room singer, who becomes the object of Hyde’s sadistic affections. Tracy has many surprises for his audiences in his portrayals, different from any ever seen of the famous performances given from the day of Richard Mansfield. He devoted months of study to the intriguing Stevenson characters, creating his own interpretations of the amazing split personalities.

Hilarity and excitement come to the Academy Theatre to-morrow and on Friday night in “Barnacle Bill,” new Wallace Beery starring picture, which finds him in the most comical romance of his career. Beery plays a waterfront loafer who falls in love with Marjorie Main, playing the daughter of a ship chandler, and at the same time is confronted with the care of Virginia Weidler, playing his small daughter. He and Leo Carrillo go to work on a tuna fishing boat, get into a dispute with the combine operating the refrigerator scows, light it out, and eventually become heroes of the fishing village. Most of the picture was filmed at picturesque Fish Harbour, seat of California’s tuna fishing industry. Comical highlights include Beery’s wooing, the absurd duet he and Marjorie Main sing, and the hair-pulling battle staged by Miss Main and Connie Gilchrist over Beerv.
