ACADEMY THEATRE

CURRENT PROGRAMMES Columbia’s “Mystery Ship,” with Paul Kelly, Lola Lane and Larry Parks playing the leading roles, will be shown at the Academy to-night. Acclaimed as a thrilling melodrama, the film is said to move across the screen at mile-a-minute speed as one blistering climax follows .another with machine-gun precision. The story, itself, is an- unusual and timely one, dealing with government problems in deporting undesirable aliens and saboteurs. “Invitation to Murder,” the second picture, is said to be crammed with thrills and suspense, yet to be different in its treatment of an exciting theme. The picture presents an answer to an ageless question—is there such a thing as a justifiable murder?

The story of “Almost Married,” to be shown at the Academy Theatre to-morrow, has the merit of spontaneity which is exploited all along for chuckles. That is brought about through the mistake of a transportation company as the result of which a rich young man (Paige) has a cabaret singer (Jane Frazee) pretend to be his fiancee. Principal complication is that the girl’s father, a horse doctor, is embarrassingly overjoyed about the match, so much so that his exuberance smothers the heartbreak of the boy’s socialite parents. An amusing story is combined with brisk direction to make an entertaining picture. That grand, robust, outspoken, immortal character of Norman Reilly Raine’s—Tugboat Annie—comes back to the screen in the second picture,! “Tugboat Annie Sails Again,” starring Marjorie Rambeau and Alan Hale. Tugboat Annie, played by Marjorie Rambeau, maintains that she’s the “best man” in the tugboat fleet, despite her company’s belief that she’s through as a skipper. She’s not through by any means, and proves it when she lands a contract for the exclusive business of her boss’ biggest customer and thwarts her arch enemy, Captain Bullwinkle, played by Alan Hale, from- completing a scheme to throw Her company into bankruptcy.

MINERS’ THEATRE PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW “Federal Bullets,” starring Milburn Stone, Zeffie Tilbury and Terry Walker, will be featured at the Miners’- Theatre to-morrow. The story tells of the investigation by Federal G-Men into the activities of a wealthy woman who bosses the underworld of an American city, culminating in the round-up of the gang and the end of the lady’s pose as a philanthropist. . “Invitation to Murder” will also be screened.
