Margarine for Troops The Australian War Cabinet has approved of the issue of vitaminised margarine as a substitute for butter in certain lines of communication areas where experience has shown that butter cannot be satisfactorily stored, handled or transported. Announcing the decision, the Prime Minister (Mr Curtin) said that the War Cabinet had before it a report by the Army consultant physician that there was no medical objection to the use of vitaminised margarine, which was a 100 per cent. A Mile an Hour “In order to'amuse ourselves we threw bits of paper overboard,” said Captain Sinclair., when describing his escape from Greece in a fishing boat, at the Hastings Rotary ( Club luncheon. “From these bits of paper, we judged our speed, which we put down at a mile an hour,” he said, amid laughter. During the voyage a sextant was made by one man on board out of two pieces of wood. The angle of the sun was guessed at and their position was plotted from a school atlas. Afterwards, he said, when the destroyer picked them up, they found they were only 10 miles out of their bearing.

Unsuitable Properties

Cases in which estate agents have offered entirely unsuitable farm and house properties to returned soldiers have been recorded, according to the annual report of the Wellington branch'of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand. The rep'ort states that some time ago the State Advances Corporation took steps to set up property registers for the convenience of returned soldiers, and the institute, at an interview with the head of the corporation, obtained an assurance that there was no intention to interfere with the activities of members of the institute. The report urges upon members of the institute the necessity and desirability of quoting to returned men nothing but propositions of good value which are suited for the soldiers’ requirements and which are in good order and condition. Women at the Bar Arguing that a woman’s place is in the home, Senator Ahmed Ramsy urged the Egyptian Senate to amend the law governing the legal profession in Egypt in order to prevent women from being called to the Bar, according to the Egyptian Mail (Cairo), January 21, 1942, and quoted by the New Zealand Law Journal. “God,” said the Senator, “has given women the special duty of bringing up children and making a home. Any departure from this is going against the law of the Almighty and against the traditions of man. The fact that women have not been given the vote is a further argument against including them in the legal profession.” The Senator’s proposal was referred to the Proposals Committee of the other House. About a dozen Egyptian women lawyers are now prac-, tising at the National ‘Bar. ■
