“THE LITTLE ADMIRAL”

NOW PRISONER-OF-WAR . 70-YEAR-OLD WALTER COWAN

.It is now officially announced that Admiral Walter Cowan, whom the Italians claimed in May to have captured in the Libyan Desert is a prisoner.

The 70-year-old admiral, after having fought in eight wars and after 10 years in retirement, volunteered for special service at Tobruk, saying, “At 70 I want to die on the battlefield.”

He arrived at Tobruk in the middle of its hottest period of defence, and visited the defence posts regularly, ignoring bombs, shells and raiding parties.

The Navy nicknamed him “Tich” (after the once-famous comedian, Little Tich), but the Tobruk garrison re-nicknamed him “The Little Admiral.”
