SENT TO MIDDLE EAST TROOPS LARGE ORDER FOR AUSTRALIA The Commonwealth, at the request of the British Government, hail accepted extremely large orders for canned cheese for the fighting forces in the Middle East and India, said the Minister'for Supply, Mr Beasley. He was replying to a statement by the Victorian Premier, Mr Dunstan, that it was paradoxical that a producing State like Victoria had to import cheese. Every cannery in Australia, said Mr Beasley, had been working at full pressure to meet the demttnds from the Middle East and India, as well ■ as those of the forces in the South- ' west Pacific area. ' One Victorian firm asked permission to- import a small | quantity of. matured cheese from ] New Zealand to mix with the local j cheese, and this was readily given, j Cheese was not the only item j which 'Australia had obtained from j New Zealand, said Mr Beasley, j Hides had been flowing from New | Zealand into Australian military fac- j tories for months, and boots made in , Australia from New Zealand bides i were now being worn by troops in Australia, India, Syria and Egypt. | Australia had also imported hides from South America.
