WORK ABOUT TOWN

r USUAL MAINTENANCE ENGINEER’S REPORT WAIHI BEACH WATER SUPPLY Works completed and those that had received attention during the month were summarised as under by the engineer, Mr F. G. Bourke, in his report to the monthly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council on Wednesday evening:— Maintenance: The usual maintenance in the matter of the cleansing of the main streets, storm water channels, cess pits, and public conveniences has been attended to, and in addition metalled road surfaces have also been maintained, while the patching of tar-sealed roads and footpaths in various parts of the borough has been carried out. Abattoir: The fencing in connection with the sub-division of the council’s abattoir holding paddock, consisting of a seven-wire post and battened fence, approximatly 13 chairs long, with gates, strainers, stays, etc., has been completed. The drinking trough has been removed to a more convenient position in the paddock and the water supply extended to same with a new ball-valve connected thereto.

Beach Water Supply: The new bull-dozer water supply pump with high pressure cylinder has been installed at the Waihi Beach pumping station and is working satisfactorily. Sanitary Depot, Tauranga Road: The work in connection with the, installation of a water supply at the council’s sanitary depot, Tauranga road, is in progress. The pump hitherto in use at the Beach will be installed at this depot. Bridges: The local police having reported by telephone on the evening of Monday, October 5, that the traffic bridge in Richmal Street was dangerous to traffic, an inspection of the bridge was immediately made, and revealed that the" outside stringer had rotted away and fallen into the creek. The replacing of the stringer, together with minor repairs to the bridge decking, has been com : pleted and is now satisfactory.

Drainage of Streets Storm-water Drainage: As mentioned in my last report to the council that it would be necessary to increase the- capacity of the stormwater pipe drain in the Convent School ground, I have to report that 33 feet of 4-inch field tiles have been removed and replaced with 9-inch glazed earthenware pipes connecting with the existing 9-inch pipes discharging into the main drain across Union Street. The newly-laid section has been cement jointed and a concrete inspection chamber "has also been installed, the work completed should obviate further flooding of adjacent property. ‘

Silverton Road: The kerbing and channelling, road grading and footpath formation in Silverton Road, extending from Kenny Street to Johnson Street, is in progress. Consols Street: The open stormwater drain on the northern side in Consols Street, extending from Victoria Street to Margaret Street, has been cleared of overgrowth and is now functioning. The open stormwater drain in Kensington Road, extending'from Regent Street to Russell Street, has similarly been treated, and storm-water pipes running across the centre of the proposed roadway adjacent to the Beach Bus Service Company’s premises has been removed to the boundary and discharged into the Main Street water channel. This" alteration was necessary as the road is being used for heavy traffic. Horse Mower: The annual cutting of grass in the borough streets with the council’s horse mower has been commenced. '

Machinery: The annual inspection by the Government inspector of the council’s plant, including abattoir, steam boiler, road roller, Waitete quarry and the gasworks, has been made. Alterations in connection with the brick-work at the rear of the abattoir have been effected to the satisfaction of .the inspector. Waterworks and Beach Waterworks: During the month a number of minor repairs to valves, fire plugs, etc., have received attention, services cleaned and renewals made in Rosemont Road and Elliot Street. The pipe line to the reservoirs and intakes, etc., have been inspected weekly. Minor leakages on this main have also received attention, and the main track has been metalled where necessary. I would point out to the council that the work of clearing and cleansing the reservoirs is due to be undertaken this summer, as the work is most essential.

Waihi_ Beach: I have to report that the Beach caretaker, Mr J. Toms, left on October 1 to undergo two weeks’ gunnery instruction at a military camp. Mrs Toms has undertaken part of his duties during his absence. The usual Beach maintenance has been attended to, and oil has been provided for the spraying of stagnant pools of water. The wing wall on the western side of fhe Beach traffic bridge has been retimbered, this work being chargeable to the Main Highways Board. The report was adopted.
