Baby Show on Monday

Keen interest will doubtless be taken by proud Waihi mothers and friends in the baby show to be held on the Recreation Ground on LabourDay in connection with the Patriotic Gala. Three classes for both boys and girls have been arranged, and further particulars are advertised.

Sunday ’Buses to Beach

Advice that representations made had been noted, and that it had been decided to institute Sunday ’bus services to and from Waihi Beach as suggested, was received from the No. 1 Licensing Authority, Mr E. J. Phelan, by the Waihi Borough Council at its monthly meeting on Wednesday evening. “That is very satisfactory,” remarked the Mayor,. Mr W. M. Wallnutt, in moving that the communication be received.

Maori Haangi

Local members of the native race are leaving no stone unturned to tempt the appetities of their pakeha brothers at the Maori haangi to be prepared at the patriotic Gala ’on the Recreation iGround on Labour Day. Two hundredweight of meat, together with vegetables, will be cooked, and patrons will be able to enjoy a satisfying and tasty mid-day dinner, served in flax baskets, at moderate charge. Trench-mortar Demonstration One of the most interesting features of the Patriotic Gala Day to be held on the Recreation Ground next Monday, Labour Day, will be a demonstration by Home Guardsmen with a three-inch trench-mortar. Two detachments of four men each, under Sergeant A. Roberts, will take part, and the demonstration will start at about 2.30 o’clock. Four practice bombs will be fired, and a brief description of the working of a mortar will be given by Sergeant t Roberts. Prisoners of War To help raise funds for the work of the newly-formed Waihi and District Prisoners of War Relatives and Friends’ Association, a dance will be held in St. Joseph’s Hall this evening. One of the objects of the association is to assist next-of-kin of local boys held prisoner to get parcels of warm clothing to send them. In many cases, getting these parcels has proved a very great effort, and it is the hope of the association, with the generous support of the public of Waihi, to give what assistance it can in this direction.

Soldiers’ Appreciation Parcels of comforts sent by , the New Zealand Red Cross to sick and wounded men and prisoners of war have been greatly appreciated, as countless letters from members ■ of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force have told. Further tribute direction is paid by Private H. A. to the work of the organisation in this Murrell, of the 6th Brigade, who recently returned to the Dominion after seeing much service in the Middle East. Only those who had received such parcels fully know what they meant to a soldier, said Private Murrell, and he and all who had shared his good fortune in receiving parcels had the greatest aditiiration for the women-folk at home who had so selfishly undertaken such a fine task. Private Murrell, who was born in Karangahake, was educated at the old Waihi Central School.
